Dentist NYC - Fluoride treatment
What is fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is present in water supplies and some foods. When used both topically and ingested, fluoride is a very effective agent to prevent tooth decay. The benefits of fluoride have been noted by medical professionals for over 50 years.
How does topical fluoride work?
Fluoride can be applied to the teeth topically using dental products such as toothpaste, mouthwash and in a professional dental application. The mineral fluoride penetrates into the outer surface of the tooth enamel which makes it more resistant to decay. We recommend that children have a professional application of fluoride during their normal twice per year dental cleaning and checkup.
How does systemic ingestion of fluoride work?
Fluoride enters body from foods that we eat, and water that we drink. Fluoride is deposited into the teeth and allows them to become stronger. Systemic fluoride also helps to prevent tooth decay.
Our recommendations on fluoride
For adults and children, we recommend using a fluoride toothpaste. We are conservative in our approach to fluoride supplementation. Some studies have shown that excessive amounts of fluoride can be toxic. Therefore, at Sachar Dental NYC, we do not recommend ingesting fluoride in drops or pills. We do, however, recommend topical application of fluoride.
Fluoride treatment for sensitive of teeth
For adults with excessive cold sensitivity of the teeth, we often apply a topical varnish of fluoride. Additionally, we sometimes prescribe a prescription strength of fluoride toothpaste.
Healthy teeth
Fluoride alone does not guarantee healthy teeth. It is important to brush and floss daily, eat a healthy diet, avoid simple sugars, and come in twice per year for your routine dental checkup and dental teeth cleaning.
