Is periodontal surgery painful?
Periodontal surgeries are performed under local anesthesia and therefore are painless during the procedure. When the anesthesia wears off, most patients experience some pain that is alleviated with medication.
What are the types of periodontal surgery?
The different types of periodontal surgery are:
- Pocket reduction surgery
- Dental implants
- Soft tissue grafting
- Gum grafting
- Gum recession surgery
- Ridge modification
- Crown lengthening

When is periodontal surgery necessary?
Patients that have undergone a deep cleaning for periodontal disease, and that has failed to remove all bacteria and/or reduce the deep gum pockets, will then be candidates for periodontal surgery.
How much does periodontist surgery cost?
The following are the costs of periodontal surgery:
- Pocket reduction surgery: $1,500 per quadrant (one fourth) of the mouth
- Dental implant surgery: $4,800 each
Most PPO dental insurances usually cover the cost of periodontal surgery at 50-80%.
What is pocket reduction surgery?
Pocket reduction surgery has also been called gingivectomy, osseous surgery, and flap surgery. All of these terms describe periodontal surgery with the goal of gaining access to the roots of the teeth, under the gums, in order to remove bacteria, plaque and tartar.
How much does pocket reduction surgery cost?
The cost out of pocket reduction surgery is $1,500 for each quadrant (one fourth) of the mouth.
