Periodontal Deep Cleaning NYC FAQ
What is periodontal deep cleaning?
A deep cleaning differs from a regular dental cleaning in that it often requires local anesthesia in order to make it comfortable and pain-free for our patients. This allows us to get deeper within the gums to remove bacteria, plaque and tartar.
Can deep cleaning help periodontal disease?
In the early stages of periodontal disease, a deep cleaning can reverse the disease process, and stop the progression of infection, in order to avoid tooth loss. A deep cleaning is a nonsurgical periodontal treatment.
Is periodontal cleaning the same as deep cleaning?
The difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning is deep cleaning allows us to get deeper under the gums by using local anesthesia in order to keep it comfortable. A deep cleaning is performed when we note that bacteria is present greater than 3 mm under the gums.
How long does it take for gums to heal after deep cleaning?
It is normal to have sore gums for the first 24 hours after a deep cleaning. We recommend rinsing with salt water.
