TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) NYC FAQ
What is the main cause of TMJ?
There are many causes of TMJ disorder. The most common cause is clenching and grinding of the teeth. Other causes include: trauma, mal-aligned bite, missing teeth, sleep apnea, sleep disorders, airway obstruction and sometimes it is idiopathic (unknown).
Can TMJ go away on its own?
In some circumstances, very minor TMJ discomfort can go away without treatment. However, early diagnosis and treatment is helpful in preventing more severe and occasionally debilitating pain.
What happens if TMJ is left untreated?
When left untreated, TMJ pain can progress to a point where it is debilitating. Often, the longer TMJ pain is present, the harder it is to alleviate. We recommend early diagnosis and treatment of TMJ pain.
What gets rid of TMJ?
TMJ pain is usually a treatable problem. Treatment depends on the symptoms and the cause of your TMJ pain. A majority of the time, we first identify the underlying cause, and treat that. Often, this involves addressing the most common cause of TMJ, clenching and grinding.
