Dental Crown NYC
NYC Dentist for a Dental Crown
What is a dental crown?
A crown is a tooth shaped cover or cap that goes over a broken down or problem tooth. It is used to restore the size, shape and strength of the original tooth as well as improve its appearance cosmetically. A crown is cemented on top of the original tooth such that it fully or partially covers it.
Why would I need dental crown?
There are many reasons why a dentist would install a crown on a tooth. When a tooth becomes decayed due to cavities to a greater extent than a filling can restore, a crown becomes necessary. A crown is also used if the tooth is cracked or broken and cannot be repaired with a simple filling. A crown is also utilized when a tooth has been worn down so much that it is not functional. The crown may also be used after a root canal procedure to restore the size and shape of the tooth that has been worked on. Crowns are also used for cosmetic reasons.
What types of crowns are available?
Crowns can be made out of many materials. At Sachar dental NYC, we only use tooth colored crowns that are made out of porcelain. As always, at Sachar Dental NYC, we only use the least toxic materials available to solve your problem.
How is a dental crown procedure done?
Putting a crown on a tooth usually requires 2 visits. On the first visit, the tooth is prepared to accept a crown, and a mold is taken and sent to our laboratory. On the second visit the actual crown is placed.
On the first visit we examine the tooth in question and often take x-rays. The tooth is then prepared by reshaping it on all sides to remove any decay and make room for the crown. Sometimes filling material is added to build up the tooth to support the crown. The next step is to take an impression of the tooth. This mold is sent to the laboratory to fabricate the crown to fit the exact shape of the tooth. The impression also enables us to prepare the crown such that it does not alter the bite. When we send information to the laboratory we will attempt to match the color of the crown to the surrounding teeth and make it look as natural as possible. We will make a temporary crown to cover your tooth and protect it while the permanent crown is being made.
On the second visit, we will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and color of the permanent crown that has come back from the laboratory. We will then use permanent cement to install the crown over your tooth. We will then make adjustments such that your bite is restored to normal.
Does insurance pay for dental crowns?
Most dental insurances pay for the placement of a crown. We will check with your insurance before performing the procedure and let you know if it is covered, and if there are any out of pocket expenses.
