Invisalign is an incredible innovation in tooth and jaw alignment that has freed people from the demands of traditional metal braces. Invisalign has also provided an opportunity for adults to align their smile without anyone knowing they’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. While Invisalign does not come with any food restrictions and is incredibly user-friendly, there are still rules to follow so that the nearly invisible aligners are able to do their job correctly and give you the straight smile you want.
1. You must wear your aligners nearly all the time.
Invisalign must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Every day. For the entire length of your treatment. If you have a big date, a major event, a presentation to give, or a photo to pose for, Invisalign can be removed for brief periods of time, but there should be no major lag in treatment beyond an hour or two. Invisalign is designed to move certain teeth at certain times and within a certain time frame. Veering from this schedule can certainly impact the effectiveness of your Invisalign treatment and lengthen the amount of time that you will have to wear the aligners on your teeth. Leave Invisalign out for a really long period of time and you may have to start over with one or two new sets of aligners. If you’re going to get Invisalign, be ready to commit yourself to the treatment.
2. Clean your Invisalign aligners every day.
Some people may think that since each set of Invisalign aligners is only worn for about two weeks, cleaning them is just a waste of time. But it won’t take long for those clear trays to become cloudy or discolored with bacteria, plaque, saliva, and food particles. Take the time every day to clean your aligners as instructed by your Invisalign provider – usually with recommended cleansing crystals or a soft bristle toothbrush. It’s also a good idea to rinse your aligners every time you remove them and before putting them back in your mouth after a meal. The last thing you want to do is trap bacteria between those snug-fitting aligners and your enamel, increasing your risk for the development of cavities and impacting your investment.
3. Always remove Invisalign for meals.
Because Invisalign aligners are so thin and comfortable, wearers can get really used to them being in their mouth. But don’t make the mistake of eating while wearing the aligners. Any biting and chewing could easily crack or damage Invisalign and prevent the trays from doing their job of straightening your bite and teeth. Plus, eating with the aligners in is just gross and food will dirty the aligners so that they’re far more noticeable on your teeth. It’s not difficult to take Invisalign out for every meal or snack, though you may find yourself making wiser choices about eating so that you don’t have to disturb the aligners more often than necessary. And it’s always good to be conscious about what you’re putting in your body.
Invisalign is a straightforward treatment – wear the aligners, clean the aligners, clean your teeth, take the aligners out to eat, and only drink water while wearing Invisalign. The rules are simple, but they are important.
